The Bunkier Sztuki building was built in 1965 as the headquarters of the Krakow branch of the Central Bureau of Artistic Exhibitions (CBWA). The architect of the building was Krystyna Tołłoczko-Różyska. Its facade, imprinted with concrete formwork, was designed by Stefan Borzęcki and Antoni Hajdecki.

The official opening of the pavilion took place on 11 September 1965. Until the 1990s, the Art Bunker was the only example of modern architecture within Krakow’s Old Town.
