DANCE MOMENTS 20

Together with the Goethe-Institut Krakau and Deutsches Tanzarchiv Köln we cordially invite you to 20th edition of Dance Moments: screenings of films about dance. The theme of this year’s edition is “Heartbeats,” which is going to be explored through seven unique pieces on the May 29th 2025 (18:00).

PROGRAMME (80 min.)

Syncope (Swizerland 2023, 21 min.)

Direction: Linus von Stumberg
Choreography: Sarafina Beck, Linus von Stumberg

After Whim makes it through an unconventional audition for the dance piece Syncope, the choreographer remains unsatisfied with her full commitment. But what she and the other dancers experience in rehearsals is only a glimpse of the dark vision he will impose on them. 

Solidas (Germany 2020, 10 min.)

Direction: Michael Fetter Nathansky

Departures tells the story of Giralda, an undertaker who accompanies deceased human beings into their afterlife. Interpreted with the means of Spanish flamenco dance and music, and set at an oldEast German ship canal lift, the film creates an associative fusion between Northern and Southern Europe, movement and silence, farewell and eternity.

Leleb (China 2023, 3 min.)

Direction: Marc Aziz Ressang, Nathaniel Brown
Dance: Siko Setyanto

The work of Marc Aziz Ressang deals with the fraught histories of places and the impact they have on the identity of its inhabitants. He explore the diverse human experience by observing the flux of culture and society. Framing places and stories through connecting themes, while questioning and re-framing photographyas a storytelling tool with its own time, space and reality. 

Et maintenant? (France 2023, 15 min.)

Choreography, Dance: Julien Meyzindi 

‘Et Maintenant?’ is a mixture of documentary film and danced fiction. The director tells the story of Julien Meyzindi, who joined the Paris Opera as a ballet student at the age of 12 and now, at the age of 42, has to leave as a performing ballet dancer due to his age, as the camera dances with its protagonist. It is a film-aesthetic look at the years Julien spent at the opera, as well as a look into his choreographic future.

Desert Heart (USA 2020, 4 Min.)

Direction: Jacob Sutton
Choreography: Ryan Heffington   

Desert Heart tells the story of one man’s journey to overcome the trauma of his childhood. Only by learning to love himself will he be able to find peace.

Return (Germany 2022, 14 min.) 

Direction, Choreography: Hofesh Shechter

There is no better way to celebrate being alive than through the lens of death. It gives real perspective on life, gives it meaning in a way. Return does not necessarily refer to a return from the dead, but “a way of bringing a person’s spirit back to life.”

Seasons of Dance: Summer (France 2025, 13 min.)

Direction: Tommy Pascal
Choreography, Dance: Bobbi Jene Smith, Or Schraiber

The choreography for the camera is a study of the attraction between two people, expressed in everyday gestures sitting at a table. The boundaries between the obvious and the hidden are explored, between intimacy and distance. It is also a conversation with oneself before the encounter, before the total explosion of love.
